How a Bicycle Store Became The Nation's Largest Motorcycle, Watercraft, and ATV Super Store The Beginning In 1959 the ambitious Ed Seidner purchased a small bicycle shop. Before long, he became the largest Schwinn bicycle dealer in California. In 1963, Ed expanded his business to include Yamaha motorcycles. Ed became the largest Yamaha dealer in the United States. He then added to his product lineup, Kawasaki, Bultaco, BMW, AJS, and Triumph. Forged In Fire As the motorcycle business grew, Ed's sons Steve and Ron Seidner decided to follow in their father's footsteps. In 1976, Bert's suffered a major fire. Bert's was forced to move across the street into their motorcycle salvage yard, lost all factory franchises, and then was forced to sell strictly used motorcycles, parts, and aftermarket accessories. After a short time, Ed received his contractor's license and opened his own construction company. Steve Seidner decided to go in to the automobile industry. 1982 Bert's operated by Ron Seidner, continued to stay in the motorcycle business and became California's largest used motorcycle dealer, as well as one of the world's largest motorcycle salvage dealers. Getting back in the "new" side of the business, Ron and Bert's became an industry respected Suzuki dealer. But, that wasn't enough for Ron. He then added Honda® Motorcycles, and then for a touch of class, Ducati Motorcycles. In 1989, Sea-Doo was introduced in the United States, and Ron was the first to sign on with Bombardier, the parent company to Sea-Doo. Ron and Bert's currently hold the all time record in Sea-Doo sales for twelve consecutive years! Bert's Mega Mall Is Born! As time went on, Ron purchased the local Yamaha and Kawasaki dealership in 1997. This was his ultimate goal by bringing back all the franchises in the local area into one store like his family had 20 years earlier. Once he completed this task, he decided to step it up once again and change the motorcycle industry by opening the first "big box" store. He did this by purchasing a former Target, and KIDS-R-US store. This was a 150,000 square foot facility. At that time Bert's Mega Mall's sales numbers doubled in both motorcycle and watercraft, and so did our employee count. After digesting the new volume Ron added Polaris® ATVs and watercrafts to his current line, and continued to press forward. This had the store setting new benchmarks with all of the franchises in retail sales performance. 2008 8 years later in 2008, Ron decided after seeing many other stores growing, changing and getting larger he decided to hit the throttle one more time by adding a completely new store front of over 40,000 square feet in addition to a complete re-model throughout every department. He also opened his own coffee shop with 7 customer lounges. He accomplished his goal to change the total concept of the store, and look of it to be what a real ultimate motorcycle shop is today. As of today, Bert's Mega Mall continues to be the strongest performer in the United States by holding many top performance titles with a lot of the manufacturers. They also continue to take care of customer service, and to always continue to create the ultimate showroom experience for each and every one of their customers.
