ABOUT - ,

The Story of Us 1978 James Wells Sr. got the motorcycle bug when he moved to an Orchard Mesa neighborhood where the kids rode dirtbikes instead of bicycles to get around and had access to thousands of BLM acres adjoining his neighborhood. 1979 – 1980 With $25.00 he borrowed from his mother, Joann Wells, he bought his first dirtbike. A 1971 Hodaka ACE100. With help and expertise from his father, Paul Wells, he repaired and restored it to a rideable condition and discovered an interest in the process. 1981 – 1991 Developed skill to restore dirtbikes and ATV's in his parent's garage. Bought and sold scores of motorcycles and ATV's using classified ads, which helped pay for a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Mesa State College. In 1986 Jacki Wells became a big part of the dream with the same enthusiasm for motorsports as her future husband. 1991 In April of 1991 James Wells Sr. and Jacki Wells were seniors at (then) Mesa State College, here in Grand Junction, Colorado. Together they drafted a small business plan for a class James had enrolled in for his senior emphasis small business course requirement. The business concept name, “Colorado All Terrain Recreation.” In May they graduated from college with Bachelors' Degrees. The summer of 1991 they wed and began an incredible adventure together neither of which knew the direction they would head, other than they would do it together. Good Jobs for college grads in Grand Junction were scarce in 1991, but they were determined to stay in the valley. Holding down various jobs for two years with little prospects of career employment. With a house payment and first child, Chelsea, on the way in 1993 they took the plunge into small business by starting an off-road shop with a little money, love and support of family, and $30,000 in credit card debt to secure the $300 a month retail location at 3098 I-70 Business Loop Grand Junction, Colorado along with inventory and equipment. All based on that college business plan drafted two years' prior, from the passion they both had for motorsports. The new business name “All-Terrain Motorsports.” In 1995 and two more kids, James Jr. and Courtney, they began renting ATV's, PWC's, and Snowmobiles to add to retail parts sales, used OHV and service. In 1998 they moved to the current location, 3080 I-70 Business Loop, just a couple blocks from where it all began. They built a new building and dedicated it to good friend and first employee, Kyle Widows who was tragically killed motocross racing prior to the relocation. After selling various (new) off brands of Chinese, Italian motorcycles, and ATV's, All-Terrain got a lucky break and was set-up as a franchised Yamaha ATV/ Generator dealer. In the year of 2000, they ceased renting and selling “off” brand units and dedicated all resources to selling and servicing Yamaha and used motorsport products. In 2001 they purchased Hilltop Yamaha/ Arctic Cat in Delta and operated that store until it sold in 2011. In 2005 they purchased the Sport Center of Grand Junction which sold Kawasaki and Bombardier powersports vehicles. 2016 In 2016 they purchased Grand Valley Powersports which sold Yamaha, Suzuki, and Polaris Powersport vehicles. Husqvarna motorcycles were also added at this time. Today All-Terrain Motorsports has expanded our location to include over 12,000 square feet of sales and parts floor, and 7,500 square feet of service department on nearly four acres, including the outdoor sales lot. We employ nearly 40 people in all with most of them working at our dealership for more than a decade. Our expertise, enthusiasm, and dedication to everything motorsports set us apart from any motorsport dealership in Colorado. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation for everyone that has purchased products and helped our business grow the last 25 years from its humble garage beginnings to our evolving motoplex today. We look forward to continue serving our customers from Denver to Salt Lake City for the next 25 years and beyond. We are “All-Terrain All the Time”!
